THE BLACK TULIPS

4 May 06                              [this week index]

Alexandra

I’ve never had gnocchi like it.

Usually I would rather feast on a smorgasbord of Biggie Smalls’s balls than eat gnocchi yet this was not the sort that sets up camp illegally in the stomach for months, annoying the neighbours by lighting fires, littering and laying cross-eyed claim to the local virgins. No. These little marvels swooned in the mouth like plump Victorian maidens, albeit ones basted with garlic and laid on a bed of lightly addled vegetables.

I don’t get to eat so beautifully often but having been given a gift that allowed several visits to the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill we decided to crown one of them with a pre-theatre feed. It is fortunate that we did as it was far more entertaining (and not only due to sitting near the kitchen and therefore being able to hear the chef ask “where’s the fucking parmesan”) than the ballet which was notable for two reasons:

1. the inconsequentiality of its first and third acts and
2. the buttocks of the male corps de ballet which resembled the Mitchell brothers’s heads bent close in prayer.

But that wasn’t all we saw this week. No, no, no. I’ve had more culture than a veteran candida sufferer, what with imbibing a Mendelsohn exhibition, an opera with the largest revolutionaries on the run ever seen and two comedians returning to their home waters for a charity gig that would leave locals gasping as they remembered how to laugh. In short. The De La Warr; what is it good for? The view, potato pasta and transvestite patrons. Ha.
