THE BLACK TULIPS

Barny

[from Christmas time]

So far still able to hear over the high-pitched, mid-volume screaming in my ears which troubles me in the quieter moments, despite hours of LOUD AND NOISY gigging and rehearsals, however was worried that the extra-loud party poppers at xmas lunch let off by the high-spirited and enthusiastic grandchild would finish off the hearing that remains. Each bang made me flinch like a gulf-war veteran on fireworks night.

We always have xmas lunch over the road at the neighbours, whose cats i used to feed as a wee boy when they went on holiday, and whose house i used to scour in search of women's magazines, photography books and catalogues while the cats were digesting. The closest i came, if i remember rightly, was a family health medical dictionary and a copy or two of Good Housekeeping. Personally i like to think that my abode would contain plenty to reward the inquisitiveness of an adequately motivated 12-year-old boy.

As i write my sister's boyfriend and mother's manfriend are simultaneously evacuating their xmas excesses in the upstairs and downstairs bathrooms respectively, so i shall be waiting a while before braving cleaning my teeth. Even so, a few days at home is a welcome respite and makes solid fiscal sense given the current lapse in employment opportunities. Still, looking on the bright side of relative poverty; at least it makes you put extra thought into your xmas presents, as demonstrated at the eve of the yule's gathering of tulips and old friends.
