THE BLACK TULIPS

Barny

if i were shipwrecked on a desert island and forced to choose between an exclusive diet of either hamburgers or tofu, i would most likely reject such uninspiring fare in favour of the complete back catalogue of 4AD records and something to listen to it on, and if i were further forced to plump for one artist alone it would without a doubt be the oeuvre of kristen hersh (of course including the throwing muses), so this last week, what with 4AD's 25th anniversary celebrations and all, was always going to be a good one. Although described in the guardian as half-cocked (i'm not sure why- perhaps because women feature prominently in the annals of 4AD history!?), and in spite of the oddness of its venues (conway 'village' hall in holborn, scala in king's cross, blackheath), i had fun and so did my close friend evil lynn who i forced to accompany me to kristen h. on tuesday, doing the solo years accompanied by violin and cello, and the red house painters on friday, lone guitar and what a voice! i'm not particularly one for lists, not even of the christmas variety, so i can't give an exact ranking, but i'm sure these rogue domicile decorators'd be in my top ten. my only regret is that i had neither the time nor the funds to get to every 4AD gig this week.

and to cap it all, a gig by another of my favourites, the black tulips, at club bohemia. as in any club the toilet floor is awash with leaking water and fluids of assorted other origins, but here stars and sequins sparkle and shimmer in the depths, twinkling up at you as you tinkle, just as the bar outside is flooded with corsets and cleavages, feathers and fishnets, fabulous freaks and glamorous goths.

watching/listening:

broken flowers
the beat that my heart skipped
mark kozelek
kristen hersh
mojave 3
villette
the twilight singers
