Alexandra
An alarmingly fabulous time was had at Club Bohemia. Not only did we confound the normals in the Highbury Wetherspoons before finding ourselves surrounded in the Buffalo Bar by gorgeous and glamorous creatures but I received the best compliment ever.
“You are so beautiful Alexandra” perhaps? Obviously not. “If I weren’t already married you’d be my third choice of a wife”? Oh but it were. No. A beautiful one came up to me and said that usually women weren’t allowed to have charisma on stage and that I had made her feel empowered as a woman. In a week of reports of how one third of people think that if a woman flirts then is raped then she is partially culpable and how three out of four employers would rather break the law than employ women of childbearing age it seems important. Someone joked that we were the underground Spice Girls. There are probably worse things to be.
The very next day, hobbling a little, we went to the De la Warr pavilion where ladies in four-foot feather hats and prominent hosiery stalked down the staircase. We were there for an outing in a vintage car to Agatha Christie based sites which would presumably have featured The ABC Murders where Betty Barnard, if I recall, was done to death with her own stocking in Bexhill. Unfortunately when we turned up we were told it had been cancelled. I would have caused a scene at the box office were it not for the fact that I’m me. I did of course register my displeasure by way of a small frown. Later a message was found on one of those phone contraptions in which we were informed of the cancellation several months previously.
Watching:
Silvery, Villette, more Morse, League of Gentlemen Series 2, Casablanca.
Reading:
Many Agatha Christies, plenty Conan Doyle, a little Poe.
Eating:
My first mince pie of the season. And I’m about to have Linda McCartney’s Deep Country.
Feeling:
Nippy.
