THE BLACK TULIPS

Alexandra

After a half glass of valpolicella, we sank into the darkness of the electric palace to watch Rita Hayworth sing and grin her way through the criminal underworld. A fabulous film until two thirds through: I do prefer it when the heroine dies prone in the repentant hero's arms. I was rather uncomfortable and wished to lie down to watch, preferably on a carved shoulder as I did in the dunes at Camber Sands the day before. We were there for two hours and felt an unusual peace, fortified perhaps by a skyscraper of a scone in Battle where my back was poked free of its pole dancing pain.

And all this after Friday’s Night of Joy. The front row was populated by men in the main, which always makes me more aggressive. Strange really. I should insist that ladies come to the front as I’d much rather smile. After a bathroom consultation with Heidi I opted for the Little Mermaid look (Andersen rather than Disney), suitably crippled by my red shoes, rather than last week’s Satanic Barbie, so dubbed by a beautiful Argentinian. There is a very amusing picture of me looking like a bad aerobics instructor. Perhaps the best part of the evening was experiencing iDOU and Ciccone while indulging in a picnic provided by Miss Heelz’s ma. I do love a good falafal.

Watching: Gilda; The Masque of the Red Death; Brighton Rock.

Reading: Picnic at Hanging Rock – Joan Lindsay; The White Stuff – Simon Armitage; Oracle Night – Paul Auster; an interview with the wonderful Julia Davies. I await the new Nighty Night with trepidation.
