All my life, I’ve tried to avoid watching Grease so I assumed I might know perhaps the singles and a couple of other songs from the soundtrack. Wrong! Without consciously listening to them, I somehow know them all, to a degree that scares me – now that’s insidious! For the bands, it makes covering these songs a real challenge. How do you make something so familiar sound anyway new? You can’t out-kitsch or out-twee most of these songs and they’re beyond parody so bands who try always fail (there are a few failures on here).

What you have to do is fuck with the DNA of the songs and then maybe some unusual hybrid might start to emerge. Taking that road, The Spells reinvent ‘Hopelessly Devoted To You’ as a Sonic Youth power ballad while The Black Tulips offer ‘It’s Raining On Prom Night’ as a cabaret-style torch song. There’s a symphony of synthesizer tears on The Utopians’ weepy Visage meets the Walker Brothers version of ‘Love Is A Many Splendored Thing’ and Captain Polaroid play ‘Blue Moon’ as a whisp of shoegazey pop. The Debretts even add warped lyrics to ‘We Go Together’, though I don’t remember any drive-by shootings in Grease: “bang bang you’re dead/ I couldn’t have you so I shot you in the head”.

There also a couple of tracks that almost transcend their Grease origins. Shisho are six-year-old Midge and 9-year-old Vivian, together with the mysterious Professor PueShu, who dash through ‘Rock’n’Roll Is Here To Stay’ with schoolyard punkish energy. Smoosh, you’re already too old! Anthony Harding will always be Ant, his version of ‘Those Magic Changes’ having the same introspective loved-up charge of his own songs. And the two versions of ‘Grease’ that bookend the record are great: Popkiller rock up the song while The International Karate Plus turn it into a long dirty, distorted groove.

A summer record, like summer lovin’, doesn’t last. Same with this collection; mostly it’s a case of love ‘em and leave them and hope that the burning sensation that follows is just the warmth of reminiscence and nothing that needs medical attention. Still, it’s hats off to the always excellent FLA for the package tour, especially as the downloads are absolutely free!
