The Black Tulips
The Black Tulips could probably be found somewhere in the English countryside drinking tea and playing croquet. All very quaint, except that if you turn your back they'll pour whisky into the tea and force you into sordid things with the mallets. For you see while their songs are steeped in Englishness they are produced with such a sneer and poured over with so much sex that you can't get within 20 feet of them. That's not a problem though as frontwoman Alexandra will probably be in your face before you've a chance to think anyway, screaming with her Bowie-esque snarl, while the rest of the band squeal, stamp and swagger their sound into your subconciousness. So it's a dash of David Bowie, a swig of Siousxie, a drop of Debbie and lashings of lust making a combination that "Just Keeps Coming".Silvery
Silvery are plain crazy. Well of course they'd say they do "Vaudevillian post-punk performance art", but we all know that's just an excuse to have an accordian on stage. Not that this is a bad thing, oh no. Sounding like Sparks, David Devant, Roxy Music and Queen all dressing up as circus clowns riding a wild fairyground carousel. So it's bright and chaotic as a circus should be, yet devilishly fun at the same time. You can't help but be swept along for the ride, just be careful if any of the lions get loose.Villette
Villette are a band out of time. In an age when elegance, wit, sophistication and charm exist that is where you would expect to find Villette. That age has certainly passed long ago (if indeed it every existed) but that doesn't prevent Villette from still existing there. The sing about the important things in life; reality, love, affection, honesty, truth, courage. It's deep, personal, intense and meaningful but thank god not pretentious which saves it from what otherwise sounds like a recipe for disaster. Their clever lyrics are wrapped up in some killer hooks which would make Johhny Marr or Bernard Butler jealous. It might come from another time, but it speaks volumes about now, so catch the future before it passes you by.
