PRESS: Damn Pest has reviewed The Black Tulips EP.
Here is what they say:
I encountered the Black Tulips as a two piece at the Dublin Castle at the end of last year and they were certainly unconventional, literate and visually appealing. Now as a five piece this debut has elevated the Tulips to an expansive full grown fuzzy garage disco combo that accentuates their raw, brash English assault on modern beat music. ‘Just Keep Coming’ clangs, stutters and shudders before a filthy bassline introduces the enigmatic vocalist Alexandra who is initially temperate then lets her voice expand and enthral into a tempestuous wail that is both darkly Gothic and electrifyingly close to the bone, like Siouxsie encountering the Slits on the set of Rocky Horror.
‘I don’t want you’ is the best of the bunch though; it is a relentless, rollicking pop song that is frenetic but utterly tuneful. It is confidant, ballsy and has the ability to make you move while remaining edgy and reticent especially when the song frequently breaks down and Alex howls the title refrain. There is also a great implosive ending.
A hugely impressive debut ends with the two minute ‘Sad Sally’ a slab of Bowie at his glammed up best about a girl who feels ‘enhanced by her wonderbra’. The Black Tulips have entered our consciousness with eccentricity, wit, intelligence and a trio of spiky fuzzed gems. Enjoy.
